Canada’s immigration policy and legislation proudly supports family reunification. It is possible to sponsor your family members to Canada under the Family Class if you or your spouse is a Permanent Resident or Citizen of Canada.

There are four main sponsorship categories of the Family Class:

- Spouse or Common Law/Conjugal Partner Sponsorship

- Dependent Sponsorship

- Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship

- Adopted Children and Other Relatives Sponsorship

Immigration under the Family Class begins with the assessment of the sponsor as well as assessment of the person who is/are being sponsored. A sponsor is required to sign an “Undertaking” with the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada which implies that the sponsor agrees to provide an unconditional promise of support to the family members he wishes to sponsor. A sponsor would have to prove his capability of supporting his family members for a period of between three and ten years depending on the category of the family sponsorship he applies.
